Four Easy Tips to an Outdoor Digital Advertising Success

By Dave Bradley

There are four parts to any winning outside digital advertising solution, without one of these key wooden blocks, the wall is sure to collapse. Let us analyse at each block.

1) LCD screen - for outdoor use, the best type of screen is a sun bright screen, these work ideally in direct sun light with no affect to the TV. A commercial screen is the perfect choice, as these are designed for constant use rather than the TVs we have at home that are only used a few hours per day - a commercial TV is designed to run 24 x 7.

2) Media players - there are three types of digital advertising media players, one is wireless, one is wired and the other is based on storing the media on to a storage device, such as a memory card. These vary in price from the cheapest, this being the memory card kind with the hard wired media player next with the WIFI unit being the most costly. The choice will be dictated by the projects requirements, the most popular units are the hard wired and wireless solutions as the content can be uploaded from one central location if you have a medium to large signage network.

3) Software - this normally comes in two forms, the first is to create the media that will be shown on the digital signage network and there are many free or trial packages on-line to try, before you commit to purchasing the media content creation software. The other type of software is normally integral in the media player, so many screens can be controlled from one central office through a browser window as if you where on the Internet. The content players for memory cards have a built in menu and is controlled through a remote control, much like a remote for a TV.

4) LCD enclosure - so without protection, how is your digital signage solution going to work? This is the primary function of an LCD display enclosure to protect the hardware from water and excessive heat, this could be in a kitchen or on a beach, out on the streets of Arizona or in a hospital in North Carolina. These flat panel enclosures give protection not only from the weather but also potential attack from vandals and vandals.

At the end of the day, it would be futile to spend days installing fibre for the media players to find that the displays had been vandalised or even worse stolen. Each one of the above tips could help you reach digital advertising Nirvana.

Dave owns the leading manufacturer of outdoor digital signage protective cases, as well as a range of monitor enclosures that are used throughout the world through a network of integrators.

Waiting Room Kiosks and Virtual Receptionist

Waiting Room Kiosks and Virtual Receptionist

Waiting room kiosks are interactive touch screen self-service kiosks with waiting room and virtual reception software. The waiting room kiosk can be used in any waiting area, and the applications can be changed to suit the needs of an individual waiting room. With a Kiosk operating your waiting area, you will find that the visitors will experience less time in the waiting room due to more efficient management. Not only can the kiosk manage the waiting room, but it is also multifunctional being able to also provide information to the visitors and when not in use it behaves as a digital sign.

Managing the waiting room

When a visitor arrives they go to the kiosk to notify their arrival. The kiosks might then ask them to take a seat, or let them know where to hang their coat, or direct them to where they can get themselves a drink.

However the kiosk can also print out a survey or questionnaire and ask the visitor to fill it in whilst they wait. This is particularly helpful if you need to make sure you have up to date information about your client, or you are looking for marketing feedback, or if you want to gain information that might help you to help them further or cross sell. The survey could also be done online using the touch screen.

SureStart Information Points for Sure Start Centres

SureStart Information Points for Sure Start Centres

The early years of a child’s life are very important for the child’s health, education, mental development and well being. However, some families find the early years a difficult time, and they need help with childcare, health issues, finance and family support related concerns. Sure Start was created to help babies, children under five and their families with health, educational and social development, so that the child got a ‘Sure Start’ in life before entering into full time education.

The information and help covered by Sure Start encompasses a few government departments - health, social services and early education. This is a vast amount of information that each Sure Start centre needs to make available to the families that it is trying to help. Touch screen information kiosks can offer a solution to enable Sure Start centres to make this information accessible and always up to date.

Using Kiosks to deliver information to the public is not a new innovation, local governments have been using touch screen kiosks for years in different departments, and they have been found to be a very useful tool. Kiosks are a great way to present and deliver information because they can hold multitudes of information that is easy to access with a few touches of the screen. What could be simpler, you see on the screen the information you want to know more about, so you touch what you want to read and the kiosk shows you the information; Simple but brilliant.

However, not all kiosks are also multilingual. In today’s diverse society, English is not always a person’s first language. Kiosks that are primarily English ‘speaking’ are not user friendly for all users, and language barriers mean that the user will either have to find someone to translate the information for them, or run the risk of confusing the information shown to them because of language issues. Of course the obvious solution is a multilingual kiosk that can display information in the users preferred language.

More Efficient Hospital Departments with E-triage Kiosks

More Efficient Hospital Departments with E-triage Kiosks
E-triage Touch Screen Kiosks are a tried and tested solution for patients to self-triage. The first E-triage was installed in a Canadian hospital in the accident and emergency department back in August 2008, since then the department has been reaping the benefits of a quicker triage time, shorter waiting times for patients and less staff tied up in the triage and booking in processes. So why has E-triage been so successful?

One of the main reasons why E-triage is so successful is because it has made the triage process much quicker. On average, the triage kiosk cuts triage time by half. The kiosks is able to slice so much time off the process because people can type in the information themselves directly onto the machine via a physical or on-screen keyboard, so there is less time spent on the patient transferring information to a triage nurse. The kiosk is also saves time because the software runs through its script asking all the correct questions and doesn’t indulge the patient in a conversation about unrelated issues.

Once the kiosk has assessed a patient the kiosk can then place the patient in an e-queue in accordance to their medical needs. However, if the kiosk deems that the patient is going to need blood tests or x-rays after the e-triage consultation, the kiosk can send an electronic message to the medial team in the radiation department or for the nurse who is taking blood samples. The kiosk can send a message with the patient’s information and the tests or x-rays that they require. The kiosk can then print out a map with details showing the patient how to get to the appropriate department for their tests to be carried out, and the patient joins the E-queue.

Homebase Offers its Customers Digital Help and Advice with Touchscreen Kiosks

Homebase have installed touch screen kiosks into some of their stores to offer customers information and advice about gardening and plant care. The kiosks show videos and advertising to customers that approach and interact with the kiosk.

The information is delivered in an informative way, offering topical advice. For example because it is summer, the kiosks had a information video about watering plants, a problem at the forefront of most gardeners minds during long hot sunny days, especially when people will also be taking holidays and gardens will have to fend for themselves.

The information videos offers advice about how to water plants effectively and which products would help you to make sure that plants were given the correct amount of water as well as information the customer of products that you help a garden or potted plant to retain water as well as holiday garden watering solutions.

You can see how effective a Garden centre kiosk would be to up sell products to customers in this way. Most customers probably don’t realize that there is a holiday watering solution for their garden, and so would never search the garden centre for such a product.

But this is just the start of what garden centre kiosks could do, because interactive kiosks are so versatile they could also help customers with other issues, such as…

• Plant selection help
• Garden design help
• How to design a pond
• Show products which you haven't room to store
• Information How-To Videos
• Opening times and company website
• Order on-line
For every help information section, the kiosks could be highlighting problem solving products and gardening solution.

Customers feel comfortable to walk up to a kiosk to ask for shopping assistance, more so than asking sales staff. Homebase have taken great steps to increase their sales in their Gardening section of their stores with the introduction of interactive kiosks.

Crazy Ways Billboards Are Used

Crazy Ways Billboards Are UsedBy Dave Bradley

With the high demand for larger profits, companies are turning to digital signage to increase their companies market share, so let us take a look at what is out there and how they can help us.

A recent publication demonstrated that scent is being added to billboard technology, and no where else could this be done, other than in the USA.

One such billboard is in North Carolina promoting a local restaurant with it's large piece of steak on an over sized fork. But what makes this unique? Well it also pumps out a smell of grilled steak to tempt drivers to pull in and eat, this must be a nightmare for local vegetarians.

Now this in not the first time this technique has been used in marketing, but it is the first for a billboard. Just remember before you reel in disgust that when you go to your local supermarket, they pump out baking scents throughout the shop just before the fresh bread is ready, so it sells to you through your senses.

So let us put the scent marketing to one side for now and let us look at the different kinds of billboard, these are: static billboards and LED billboards.

Static billboards.

These are a metal frame with an ad that is printed and is replaced periodically to freshen up the site. This is an old fashioned way to gain brand awareness as there is no way to update content should the advertising company wish to advertise a sale day, they would have to get new banners created then have them pasted onto the present billboards.

LED billboards.

These consist of a frame packed with LED's at 16mm centres, so that they can be viewed from a very long distance, what makes this solution unique is that the controller and the software used is so flexible, fresh new content and even news can be broadcast on these units within seconds of a company deciding to announce a sale the ads can be out there for consumers to remember the time and date of the sale.

When putting LED or LCD displays outdoors people mention sun bright screens, now there is no need as the LED billboards are 6,000 Nits or 6,000cd/m2 which makes them ideal for outdoor use in the brightest of conditions.

Dave owns the leading manufacturer of LCD enclosures, this range of flat screen enclosure are used throughout the world through a network of integrators.

Self Service Kiosks Trends - Did They Ever Go Out of Style?

Self Service Kiosks Trends - Did They Ever Go Out of Style?By Rajiv Mittal

The market for self service kiosks is likely to grow at a CAGR of approximately 19% in 2014, according to ABI Research. These projections are based on the assumption that the only thing that changes is the number of kiosks out there. As of 2010, the top industries using kiosks are entertainment, retail and travel.

Global Self Service Kiosk Trends 2010

According to Summit Research Agency's 2009 annual report on 'Kiosks and Interactive Technology,' the 2007-2009 economic recession did not reduce the number of kiosks, just slowed them down a bit. At the beginning of 2010, there were 1.85 million kiosks installed globally, with the number expected to rise to 2 million in 2011. Interestingly, 53% of the kiosks deployed have been in the North American region. Europe takes the second position, with 18%, and the Asia-Pacific region is in the third place, with 15% of all kiosks installed worldwide. Kiosks in the rest of the world amounts to just 2%.

While common sense dictates that in times of an economic slowdown, kiosks should increase in number with the obvious advantage of reducing employees, the projection is for growth through 2011. The 'rest of the world' is expected to witness the maximum growth in kiosk deployment, at 17%. The North American market is expected to grow at the rate of 17%, Europe at 13% and Asia-Pacific at 12%.

However, growth is not indicative of the total number of installed kiosks. The North American region has a clear lead in terms of the number of kiosks installed and even with the projected growth from other parts of the world, the numbers do not come anywhere close to that of North America.

Sector-wise Market Adoption of Self Service Kiosks

Self service kiosks find a ready market in the retail, entertainment and travel sectors. In retail, while stores have seen the benefit of kiosks, the foodservice industry still needs to realize the potential of self service kiosks. Other recent converts to kiosks include auto sales dealerships. Similarly, in the entertainment sector, digital downloads have not really taken off as expected. Television and PC are more convenient modes of downloading.

Currently, a kiosk across these three categories sees around 94 users daily. This figure represents a 29% decline since 2006. However, other issues influence the spread of kiosks, such as integration with the store's IT network, software that requires extremely specialized knowledge and skills, and inadequate awareness or employee skills to successfully install and operate a self service kiosk.

For more information on the advantages of installing a self service kiosk, visit http://www.agsindia.com. This firm offers technology-based solutions for not just the retail industry, but for the banking industry, the petroleum industry and postal services.

Monitor Enclosure Used For Outdoor Digital Advertising and in Healthcare

Monitor Enclosure Used For Outdoor Digital Advertising and in HealthcareBy Dave Bradley

An LCD Monitor enclosure are used through out various industries from healthcare to outdoor digital signage applications, but the main reason for use is to guard the enclosures hardware.

A screen enclosure refer to small format displays, normally up to 27" and in a 16:9 screen ratio. Now these can be used in manufacturing facilities as part of the factory information system to display data to staff, or equally in a hospital for displaying patient's details.

Now these displays can even be located outdoors to form an external video wall used for digital advertising, these work by splitting the signal on the media player and spreading them equally over the video wall, without any unique "magic black box".

Protection is paramount - so no matter if it is from extremely high or low temperatures or the vandals, a display enclosure will protect the display and the media player from the riggers of nature.

There are 2 kinds of TV enclosures, the first are manufactured from toughened LEXAN material, however we have found that they suffer under extreme temperatures and have to be replaced with a solid steel LCD enclosure, these are more rugged and durable.

A solid steel monitor enclosure is designed so that the end solution provides a protective solution, so even air borne particles can be filtered out to prevent them harming the hardware inside. In some instances monitor enclosures have been equipped with air conditioning units so they can operate independently from other systems.

Now when water is present stainless steel is used to produce the enclosure, this material has excellent corrosion resistant properties due to the amount of Chromium in its chemical genes.

Proving that a monitor enclosure can be produced from various materials and these really do depend up on the application the screen will be used for, from healthcare, factory use, or outdoor digital advertising - there is a solution for your application.

Hotel Lobby Dynamic Signage

By Dave Bradley

On a recent visit to the Marriott hotel group, we where met at the reception with a digital advertising screen that had a inbuilt motion sensor.

This gave us some basic information for the hotel, such as what leisure facility operating hours are, what was on the menu in the restaurant and in the bar and information about Internet access.

This bought time as the receptionist was busy dealing with another customer who was checking in, and by the time the ads had looped completely we where being checked in.

This is the most basic use of digital signage, however a more complex digital signage solution is deployed at the Hyatt group of hotels, here they have an interactive check in and an express check out. Also in their car park they utilize outdoor digital signage to advertise their group of hotels in various destinations throughout the globe, this type of solution is common in hotels and this is how they achieve it.

Check in desk dynamic advertising.

Here numerous large flat panel displays are deployed above the desk and are viewed by guests as they check in. The content is stored on a local networked media player just behind the wall, kind of a back office application; this is then connected to the massive displays using Category 5e network cables, this enables the content to be uploaded from a local PC connected to the media player.

Self serve check in and check out.

This application uses a floor standing kiosk that is touch sensitive so guests can input their data, i.e. reservation number. This can either be on a secured wireless network that is also used by the handheld terminals used by staff to take card payments, or alternatively they can be wired to the main computer network or be a standalone solution with the media player inbuilt.

Advantages of WIFI interactive kiosks - is there are no unsightly wires running across the floor or from the ceiling, also the kiosks can be located any where in the foyer of the hotel lobby and can be moved to another location with very little disruption.

Disadvantages of wireless touchscreen kiosks - these can be costly.

Benefits of hard wired interactive kiosks - kit costs are less than the wireless type as the hardware is more expensive.

Challenges of hard wired interactive kiosks - due to the nature of the installation, the location is really restricted to either the edges of a room of near a pillar to conceal the cables. Moving the kiosk to a new location is expensive as engineers have to be called in to re-lay to the new location.

Advantages of an interactive digital kiosk - these are very affordable, due to the media player being built in and can even run Flash content. Moving to another location is easy, just move the kiosk with no purchase any wireless adapters or having to pay for engineers to come to site.

Conclusion.

If you are going to install digital signage in a hotel lobby, you need to think how to connect it, bearing in mind if it is likely you be moved during any event, such as a wedding - the bride does not want to be upstaged by the digital signage hardware. If this is the case a digital poster is the most affordable solution.

LCD Advertising Screens are Used As EPorters

By Dave Bradley

When you arrive at a hotel, the chances are that you have never been there before, so you are unfamiliar with the layout of the motel. Now this is a issue of the past. With the use of LCD advertising screens this problem is gone.

In the immediate area around the check in desk, LCD advertising screens can be placed; these can be used to direct guests to the right rooms throughout the motel, ensuring the right company arrives at the right room for their meeting.

LCD advertising screens can be deployed near and in elevators, so customers in the lifts know that they are heading in the correct direction. This way it makes the motel easier to navigate and guests appreciate everything you can do to make their stay less stressful.

ePorter solutions can be used to direct people to the car park as well as notifying the front desk staff of leaving guests, perfect if there is a fire, as staff can pinpoint every visitor and employee to make sure everyone is accounted for.

Throughout the motel, these LCD advertising screens can add to the guests visit by sending SMS messages of special deals to their cell phones. This type of marketing is closely linked to shopping malls were each shop is after capturing each customer to get that sale.

On any visit to a motel of the future could see your mobile phone being emailed or messaged with deals from the restaurant for the first night of your stay. Then when you get to the hotel you will able to check in using an interactive kiosk, then collect your key card from the kiosk and go straight up to your room. Then when you leave you can check out using your cell.

This allows the front desk staff to deal with guests who need more specific attention, or for people who are less technology savvy.

The Patch Panel - A Brief Explanation of Form and Function

The Patch Panel - A Brief Explanation of Form and Function By Tom Pretty

The patch panel or patch bay is an instrumental piece of equipment in many offices and technology centres. Fundamentally it houses cable connections and in the majority of cases is rack mounted. The patch panel is typically two sided; the front predominantly houses shorter cable connections whilst the rear has longer wires. This setup is used because it allows the technician to perform temporary alterations to connections at the front while the rear connections remain permanent. This functionality allows for easy and convenient interconnecting, monitoring and circuit testing.

The convenience of being able to quickly and easily change connections and more specifically the path of signals is provided by the patch panel without the need for expensive switching equipment. For those who are still unsure of exactly what a patch panel is the easiest explanation is to imagine the early telephone operators and how they would connect calls by pulling a chord from one plug and then insert it into another; in function and form, this is essentially what patch panels do.

As we have established the very earliest patch panels where used within telephone exchanges where essentially a more automated form is still in existence today. However, it is not in telecommunications where the patch panel is used most extensively today. One of the largest users of panels is the entertainment industry, for example, you are likely to see patch panels in recording studios and television studios. Additionally they are also used in concert halls. In these instances the bay is used to control the connection of different pieces of equipment such as microphones, speakers and other electronic items. They are used not only for their convenience and relative cost effectiveness but also because patchbays make quick changes in equipment possible and also because they make it far easier to identify problems such as feedback, ground loops and static.

As previously stated the process that patch panels perform can be undertaken by dedicated switching equipment. In some instances switching equipment is an extremely viable alternative as they make routing far simpler. Essentially, with switching equipment the technician simply has to press a button rather than remove a jack and place it into another plug. However, while switching equipment can sometimes be a more convenient option, it is often the case that the cost of such equipment makes its usage incompatible with business budgets.

This article has hoped to provide an explanation of what a patch panel is and fundamentally what it is used for. While this equipment may not be extremely interesting to many, in certain industries they are an essential inclusion in any system.

Tom Pretty has studied the importance of connections and signal routing in a variety of industries and in this article takes a look at how the patch panel has evolved from the telephone exchanges of old to more contemporary uses in the entertainment industry.

Rest Room - Digital Signage

Rest Room - Digital SignageBy Dave Bradley

With the use of a digital poster people are seeing opportunities in the most un-usual places, now get ready for digital signage in the bathroom.

This is a place where everyone goes and is perfect for a small 30 second advert, and this is set to rock the world. But there is one thing to be aware of.

With the introduction of digital posters and their in built media player, businesses are seeing new marketing opportunities. Now a digital poster can be installed into rest rooms, however due to them being unsupervised there is a need to protect them, otherwise what is to stop someone taking one? Yes you can bolt them to the wall, but a regular can see how they are fastened and come prepared with the tools needed.

Now one company has developed a solution for digital posters and it will prevent unauthorized removal, the unit they have developed covers the poster and is perfectly ventilated even the audio can be heard through the wall case, constructed from steel and painted black these are bolted to the wall with special anti theft fasteners and a dedicated tool is supplied, so no one else will have the correct tool to remove the case.

Even clubs are a safe bet now, as these digital wall cases are supplied with 6 mm thick polycarbonate window that has a special coating applied that is anti scratch and anti reflective, perfect for any area that could be referred to as dangerous.

Digital posters can now be fitted in areas that have lots of foot traffic but also are classed less than perfect. So bars, rest rooms even truck stops are places these units can now be deployed without the price of deployment and the digital signage hardware preventing the advertising campaign stopping the project getting off the ground.

Digital Signage - The Potential of Self-Service Interactivity is Enormous

By David Little

If you've been reading my blog postings for some time now, you now how excited I am about the potential of hybrid, interactive digital signage.

For those who haven't ever before read my blog, let me summarize. Combining the ability of traditional digital signs to playback segment after segment of linear content (in other words, Item No. 1, Item No. 2, Item No. 3, etc.) with the interactivity normally associated with kiosk is hugely important. The traditional digital signage content can attract an audience; interactivity can hold them and direct them.

In June, new research from market research organization IHL Group underscored exactly why interactivity is an essential element in the future course of digital signage and the nearly unbelievable potential for upside growth. According to the researcher, transactions at self-service kiosks will exceed $607 billion in North America this year.

I hope you're sitting down for this next tidbit. IHL Group projects the value of these self-service kiosk transactions will more than triple to in excess of $1.7 trillion by 2012. According to IHL Group Lead Retail Analyst Lee Holman, the research confirms what's been seen over the past couple of years as all manner of self-service kiosks -everything from automated movie theater ticket sales kiosks to $1 DVD rental machines- grow in consumer popularity. In Hollman's words, "consumers are showing a preference for self-service kiosk activity of all kinds."

The research, "2008 North American Self-Service Kiosks," documents how self-service kiosks are being used in six particular areas: self-checkout systems, ticketing kiosks, check-in kiosks, food ordering, postal systems and other retail kiosks. While the traditional digital signage component might not be appropriate for every self-service kiosk, it amplifies the potential of others.

For example, consider the movie ticket sales kiosk. Add the linear playback component of traditional digital signage and this sales kiosk instantly transforms into a sales promotion tool by playing back movie trailers of what's showing in all the glory a high-definition display panel has to offer. Take that kiosk out of the theater lobby and place it in malls across the country, and you have a dual-purpose movie marketing machine that reaches potential customers who might not otherwise have given going to the movies a serious thought.

Or, consider an airline ticket kiosk. How often between flights have you walked by these kiosks and seen no busy travelers nearby. During these opportunities, couldn't these kiosks offer linear playback of travel related goods and services? Certainly, the linear digital signage content should in no way detract from the primary mission of these kiosks, but a well organized implementation could prevent that and offer the potential of increased revenue in the form of advertising sales.

In my mind, the bottom line is this: The full potential of self-service kiosks may be even larger than IHL Group forecasts. If the interactivity of the self-service kiosks is matched up with the "carnival barker" role traditional digital signage can play, it's conceivable that in the right situations this hybrid, interactive digital signage can drive the value of these sorts of transactions even higher.

How Lobby Kiosks Can Save on Your Companies Payroll

How Lobby Kiosks Can Save on Your Companies PayrollBy Rich Bernstein

With the economy in its current state, businesses are constantly looking for ways to save money without cutting corners. Everyone knows that the fastest way to save money is to cut people, but many people don't want to do it. It is, however, a quick fix that will put some extra money into the company's bank account. One of the best ways to save on payroll is install a lobby kiosk in your business's lobby. A lobby kiosk can replace the need for a receptionist, will generally be looked upon highly by clients and can be a very positive influence on a company's look or feel.

These days, kiosks are far more advanced than they were in the past, and can provide a completely user-centric experience that minimizes frustration. Kiosks are attractive, and also give you the opportunity to further your business's branding, as the kiosk is basically one giant brand-builder. Users will enjoy their experience using a kiosk, and you'll benefit from the opportunity to subtly advertise your business to them.

While many companies hire a receptionist to work up front, this practice is beginning to get dated. Most of the work a receptionist ends up doing is administrative, and the business owner can absorb these simple tasks in order to save money. Paying one less person can make a big difference on a company's bank account. By installing a kiosk in your lobby, you will no longer have to worry about having someone up front to greet clients and customers, as the kiosk will do it for you.

Installing a kiosk also diminishes the chances of errors that might otherwise be made by a human. Everyone makes mistakes, but computers (as long as they're programmed correctly) do not. Even a simple mistake made by a receptionist can be very costly. A lobby kiosk also never takes a break, and therefore never misses an opportunity to obtain a new client.

Kiosks truly are the wave of the future, and many people think they will eventually replace receptionists completely. Get on board and be one of the first to embrace this wonderful new technology; you'll be glad you did.
