Digital Menu Boards - Is There an Alternative?

Digital Menu Boards - Is There an Alternative?By Dave Bradley

Indoor dynamic advertising is quickly becoming the biggest industry of 2010 with the demand for organisations to deploy some type of digital signage solution. No matter if it is to be used in the waiting room of a company or the middle of your Quick Serve Restaurant - solutions are out there.

These are normally bigger than conventional digital posters and start at 32 inches and go up to 72 inches, these are one of the most affordable solutions for snack bars and cafes to show their electronic menus.

Earlier there have been issues with users wanting to add Flash media to their menus and they had to use an individual media player so they could run the right media. Due to the built in media player not able to support Flash, now with the advancement in technology, there is a solution for your electronic menu board at a very cheap price.

Loading Media on to the menu board.

All you need to do is produce the campaign in Flash then convert it to a digital video format like (AVI) then load it onto the memory card and insert this into the integral media player. Power the screen on and access the on screen menu to select the orientation of the campaign.

Then mount the electronic menu board in either horizontal or vertical, the best position that suits your application. Then when you wish to add new content just copy it from your PC to a flash drive and insert it in the USB connector on the LCD advertising board and the new ads will then be displayed.

Dave offers a range of indoor digital menu boards that are either wall mounted or floor standing as well as manufacturing a range of outdoor LCD enclosures for outdoor digital signage protection and has been deployed in Australia, America, Canada and Europe.

Video Wall Installations - An Integrators Nightmare

By Dave Bradley

When a video wall is conceived as the perfect solution for the digital advertising project, there is always a challenge and it comes down to the poor deploy-er as these can be an integrators nightmare - but not anymore.

What constitutes a video wall?

So what constitutes a video wall, it can be a three by two configuration or a six by four set up. It just depends how much of a budget your client wants to invest in the project.

When you fit a single LCD display that is to be used for digital advertising, you will have to arrange the 3 or 4 cables into a neat harness assembly at the back of the TV - not too problematic. Now the problem lies when you have multiple TVs, so for example when you have a video wall of 24 displays all 42" size TVs, now the amount of cables is a potential problem for the installer, because now he has to deal with 100 cables.

Imagine the frustration and the extra money involved when you discover when the video wall is complete that there is one cable not connected properly (no picture on the TV). Then you trace it back to the monitor in the cent re of the wall, so your next challenge is how to get to the rear of the screen and correct the connection. Having to unassembled the wall can add a further day to the price of the project.

Now one company have come up with an answer that is so revolutionary after listening to installer's feedback over years of development will make all installers and integrators lives much easier.

The solution they produced is used to offer the integrator ultimate flexibility, as once the mounts are bolted to the wall the outer mounted TVs can be moved to either the left or the right to access the screens next to them, another unique feature is that if you press the screen backwards, it will unlock in its lock and you can pull the TV forward 10" to work on it, then just click it back into position - perfect for cent re screens.

This new solution also helps with screen maintenance, reducing hours of on site installers time.

Dave owns the worlds leading manufacturer of LCD enclosure, these LCD enclosures are used by digital signage companies throughout the world for protecting the signage hardware when outdoors. Offering protection from extreme weather as well as vandalism.

Digital Signage - Getting it Correct

Digital Signage - Getting it CorrectBy Dave Bradley

Some businesses in the digital advertising industry think that some forms of digital signage are not used for the right application discover why they are certainly wrong.

Digital advertising is very prevalent anywhere and is set to be added to the mobile sector, from on the back of vans to taxi top digital advertising. Now one American federal body is looking to deploy over 50,000 taxi top digital signage solutions throughout the USA.

Some tiny minded people think it will not work however the idea is that the ads on the form of images are stationary on the screens whilst the cab is mobile, then when it stops a video starts to play, otherwise whilst the vehicle is in motion the ads would have very little effect as you would only be able to see them for a few seconds - not perfect for outdoor digital signage.

But the interior of taxi cabs is a totally different story with many taxi cab companies installing LCD advertising systems in their headrests, these include the display and a built in media player, that holds the content on memory cards and can be updated with a USB flash drive using the connector on the media player.

For example there are units that are interactive and come with segmented touch screens, so all the passenger has to do is select the segment they are interested in, so this is a marketing opportunity for local motels, cafes, theaters and bars to promote their company and services.

Other units can be updated using 3G or a wireless network, this sort of solution can be updated when the taxis are all over cities rather than in one central location. With visual displays from 7 inches up to 17" and can be fixed between the front 2 seats, from the roof or in the headrests.

The companies that say taxi cab advertising does not work will for sure wish they had been involved with this medium, as this is one of the up tapped vertical markets and as every business knows restricting your product is certainly counter productive and the business will lose out on higher margin products.

PC Enclosures - The Different Types Used For Factory Information Systems

By Dave Bradley

When SAP or SCADA is being installed on a factory floor there are many things to consider and one the main overlooked solutions is how to protect the factory information system.

Now this does actually depends upon the hardware that will be used with the information system solution, some use standard computers, others use thin clients, obviously the thin client units take up a lot less room in the factory and are normally connected to a TFT screen, were the PC is normally connected to a CRT (Cathode Ray Tube) screen these are much bulkier and demand a lot more space.

Now let us look at the options.

Thin Client Enclosure.

This will accommodate a thin client and a TFT screen up to and including a 19" screen, the case ideally should be manufactured from steel and powder coated in a general manufacturing factory or food quality stainless steel for food processing factories. These can also be either touch screen or have a keyboard in a roll out drawer below for inputting data.

PC Enclosure.

These accommodate the PC in its normal position with a monitor on top of the computer, or alternatively depending upon security a separate compartment may be needed only allowing access to the keyword for the operator whilst the computer department has full access to the computer whilst no one else has.

Advantages- well both units can need to offer protection form dust and air borne particles in general manufacturing plants, these are referred to as IP56, this means that the unit will prevent dust entering the enclosure and the case is also splash resistant. These special cases provide a safe and secure area for the computers allowing the business to function more efficiently.

Disadvantages- well this does depend upon which unit you use, if your factory has got lots of unused floor space the lower cost PC enclosure is perfect however the thin client enclosure offers a more eye catching appeal and will certainly make visitors think that you can check the progress of orders during production.

Just remember that a well thought out project will have a faster ROI.

Dave owns a manufacturing company that specialises in producing PC enclosures, these computer enclosures are used in factories throughout the World, just like their range of LCD enclosures, these products are targeted at different markets, namely the outdoor digital signage market and factory information systems integrators.

Family Intervention Project Kiosks

Family Intervention Project KiosksThe Family Intervention Project (FIP) is a hard working department set up by the Government to provide the most 'at risk' families with the high level, intensive support they need to make positive changes to their lives and the lives of their children. At risk families often have a number of issues which make their lives difficult for the family to deal with. A number of government departments including social services and the police work in coalition to help these families overcome their problems. For many of these types families the conclusion may be that they are evicted form their homes at a cost of a quarter of a million pound to the tax payer, so it is in everyone’s best interests to help these struggling families to get back on their feet. Kiosk could be the ideal way to assist the Family Intervention Project (FIP) to help families in need.

Interactive Kiosks for the Elderly

Interactive Kiosks for the ElderlyThe UK has a growing ageing population and with more elderly residents in the country there is an ever increasing need to help and support them. Touch screen information ‘Kiosks’ for the elderly bring help and support to those people who need it, and with remote access, kiosks can be kept up to date with all the latest information that old people might need access to.

Kiosks for the elderly need to have a really user friendly interface, to make it easy to navigate the information. The touch screen kiosks make interacting with a kiosk really easy. Touch screen technology doesn’t assume that the user has any previous computer experience. Front-facing the software screens display buttons and the user simply presses the buttons on the screen to select the information that they would like to display. The kiosk removes the need for users to search for information by replacing it with a discovery model whereby users navigate to information and other resources that can help. Making the kiosks look easy to use encourages people to use the machine, of course when they have used it once and experienced how easy it is, they feel comfortable to use it again and again.

Interactive Kiosks

Interactive KiosksBy Kevin Stith

A kiosk used to be basically a stand or a booth where simple services were provided to the general public. Today's kiosks perform the same function, what is absent is the presence of a human being manning the kiosk. Computers have replaced him to provide certain specific and specialized services.

An interactive kiosk is one where the user gets responses to his queries almost instantaneously and gets his job done. Most computer manned kiosks are interactive kiosks. Such interactive kiosks may be either for the purpose of providing information or for completing a few specific transactions that the computer has been programmed for.

Interactive kiosks that provide information can be seen at railway stations, airports, bus terminals and the like. The latest computers that are used in such kiosks are touchscreen kiosks and are very user friendly. The interfaces of the programs fed into these kiosks are made to be very simple and user friendly so that common people face no trouble using them. Such interactive kiosks usually give information about bus, train and flight schedules; information about any delays; a facility to view where a particular bus, train or flight is using GPS systems; and several other pieces of related information.

Interactive kiosks that are used for completing transactions are put up by banks. ATM centers are prime examples of such kiosks. Customer identification is done through the use of user ids and unique PINs. Interactive kiosks that are set up by banks for use by their customers are also used for cash withdrawal. The customer can access his bank account through the kiosk and withdraw money from his account. Banks have a system of checks and balances to ensure that no fraudulent means are used to take advantage of kiosks.

An upper limit on the amount of cash that can be withdrawn in one transaction, the number of transactions allowed in a specified time period, an alert on the use of wrong PIN and the like are a few precautionary measures set in place.

Kiosks provides detailed information on Kiosks, Scratchcard Kiosks, Internet Kiosks, Kiosk Manufacturers and more. Kiosks is affiliated with Touch Screen Displays.

How We Interact With Interactive Kiosks

How We Interact With Interactive KiosksA kiosk is a computerised machine that performs a service for us upon request. Most kiosks typically feature a touchscreen so that the user does not have to use a keyboard. This also removes the necessity for the user to be familiar with computers.

The general public is so used to ‘Kiosks’ now in their day to day lives, with the new generation being brought up closely with computers and the Internet, they have no reservations about using and giving information to kiosks, and they know, and are keen to interact with, kiosks when they need a quick and efficient service.

Touch Screen Digital Signage Now Used For Church Collections

Touch Screen Digital Signage Now Used For Church CollectionsBy Dave Bradley

Dynamic, digital advertising is used even in the House of God for various reasons and applications, now these units are featuring interactive touch panels to help in signing people up for regular giving.

Unlike in England, America has seen a huge rise in peoples beliefs especially when times are difficult, as everyone is on the same playing field. However what makes a big difference is that in the UK there is "gift aid", this is when someone gives a regular amount of cash to church every week and being a tax payer, the Church can claim the tax back on the money given, increasing the giving by some 18%.

In the USA, the giving is something different, as worshipers are seeing touch screen digital signage hardware now appearing in the Church isles, well not exactly. These interactive monitors are showing the current Churches calendar and then there is a section where the congregation can use the interactive touch screen to enter their credit card details to sign up for a set donation, even if you don't attend Church regular. This is perfect for parishioners who work away from home knowing they can contribute to the upkeep of their church as well as their neighborhood.

These can be floor standing, touch screen displays normally 42" in size and in the portrait orientation, a computer or small form factor PC is placed in a secure compartment in the rear of the kiosk or enclosure and this is then connected to the Internet and a merchant payment account that will take the parishioners donations.

Proving that if the House of God is investing in interactive, touch screen digital signage why are some companies not investing in it?

Some times businesses think that the investment is not worth the return, however digital signage is demonstrating to be an exceptional way to brand a company, organization or even a charity and it doesn't have to break the wallet.

Like everything in life, there are different priced products, so if the budget is not that big, you can either have a wall mounted digital poster or a floor standing LCD advertising display, but these are not interactive. To achieve a touch screen solution you could use an LCD enclosure and fit it with an interactive panel these panels can be infrared and this sends a light beam throughout the panel in both vertical and down lines, so when someone touches the display they break the beam and this causes the break to act as though you clicked a mouse on the screen and made a selection.

Dave owns the leading manufacturer of outdoor digital signage protective cases, they also offer a range of digital poster from 20" to 80" these are used throughout the world through a network of integrators.

Self Service Kiosks Trends - Did They Ever Go Out of Style?

Self Service Kiosks Trends - Did They Ever Go Out of Style?
By Rajiv Mittal

The market for self service kiosks is likely to grow at a CAGR of approximately 19% in 2014, according to ABI Research. These projections are based on the assumption that the only thing that changes is the number of kiosks out there. As of 2010, the top industries using kiosks are entertainment, retail and travel.

Global Self Service Kiosk Trends 2010

According to Summit Research Agency's 2009 annual report on 'Kiosks and Interactive Technology,' the 2007-2009 economic recession did not reduce the number of kiosks, just slowed them down a bit. At the beginning of 2010, there were 1.85 million kiosks installed globally, with the number expected to rise to 2 million in 2011. Interestingly, 53% of the kiosks deployed have been in the North American region. Europe takes the second position, with 18%, and the Asia-Pacific region is in the third place, with 15% of all kiosks installed worldwide. Kiosks in the rest of the world amounts to just 2%.

While common sense dictates that in times of an economic slowdown, kiosks should increase in number with the obvious advantage of reducing employees, the projection is for growth through 2011. The 'rest of the world' is expected to witness the maximum growth in kiosk deployment, at 17%. The North American market is expected to grow at the rate of 17%, Europe at 13% and Asia-Pacific at 12%.

However, growth is not indicative of the total number of installed kiosks. The North American region has a clear lead in terms of the number of kiosks installed and even with the projected growth from other parts of the world, the numbers do not come anywhere close to that of North America.

Sector-wise Market Adoption of Self Service Kiosks

Self service kiosks find a ready market in the retail, entertainment and travel sectors. In retail, while stores have seen the benefit of kiosks, the foodservice industry still needs to realize the potential of self service kiosks. Other recent converts to kiosks include auto sales dealerships. Similarly, in the entertainment sector, digital downloads have not really taken off as expected. Television and PC are more convenient modes of downloading.

Currently, a kiosk across these three categories sees around 94 users daily. This figure represents a 29% decline since 2006. However, other issues influence the spread of kiosks, such as integration with the store's IT network, software that requires extremely specialized knowledge and skills, and inadequate awareness or employee skills to successfully install and operate a self service kiosk.

For more information on the advantages of installing a self service kiosk, visit http://www.agsindia.com. This firm offers technology-based solutions for not just the retail industry, but for the banking industry, the petroleum industry and postal services.

The Benefits of a Flat Panel Monitor

The Benefits of a Flat Panel MonitorBy Morgan Hamilton

Nowadays, many people are getting a flat panel monitor, even if it is really not essential for most computer applications. The resolution for word processing applications is all that is really need from your computer monitor unless you are an artist or graphics engineer. Nevertheless, a flat panel monitor can be nice and can make your computer experience more pleasant. It has also many advantages over the traditional curve screen monitor.

A flat panel monitor consumes much less power than a normal monitor. You can save money because this monitor reduces your electric power consumption. You will not also suffer from the subtle distortion that is common in traditional curve screen monitors. A curved screen can cause eyestrain, even if your mind has been carefully trained to edit it out by hours and hours of fixedly staring at the curved computer screen.

You should try it yourself because you won't really understand the difference until you try a flat panel monitor. I'm sure that your eyes will thank you, and you will then have to track me down and thank me. This monitor also offers a clearer image than other monitors. The colors are more vibrant and the flicker of a normal monitor will not be present. Your mind is also trained to edit out the flicker, but you will notice the absence of it as soon as you try your beautiful new monitor.

Do you watch movies on your computer? If you do, then it makes sense to buy a flat panel monitor. The image will be prettier, and your movie watching experience will be more enjoyable. This is because there will be no distortion that can cause vertigo and discomfort. A flat panel monitor is perfect for your viewing enjoyment.

The savings on space is another reason for a getting flat panel monitor. It lacks the size of a normal monitor because the screen and the body of this special monitor are flat. You can fit it in a smaller space and you will have more room on your desk for other important things.

Need a Tough Computer? 5 Key Steps to Picking and Industrial Panel PC

Need a Tough Computer? 5 Key Steps to Picking and Industrial Panel PC
By Peter Stewart

Industrial panel PCs can take a huge pounding. Drown them, burn them, they can usually take it.

Industrial panel PCs take off where traditional computers leave off. They can handle more punishment, higher temperatures, have some degree of waterproofing or resistance. They comes with a lot of legacy I/O ports to serve the needs of factories that incorporate a lot of legacy technology.

The typical installation would be for controlling a machine, in a line of machines, or part of a flow element in a production line.

Here are the things to look out for:

1. Steel casing

Lightweight is not your friend. This makes the whole computer really heavy, but incredibly resistant to damage and flex. Weight will rarely be a factor in a factory, so the reliability of steel is a must.

2. IP65 front panel

Any higher rating is good too. Dust is one of the panel PCs biggest enemies, it builds up in the moving parts, blocks vents and holds in heat when it settles on heat-producing components like chips. The front panel should be able to keep absolutely all dust out of the system under normal conditions. The other, more immediately fatal element is water. Electricity + water + not much fun. Make sure the front panel can withstand at least a direct low pressure spray.

3. Touch screen or keypad

Mice and traditional keyboards won't do the trick. The mouse is unworkable with gloves and easily broken, normal keyboards are just as bad. A touch screen can be operated with gloves on, and a soft keypad attached to the system provides easy input for typing and is resistant to both water and dust.

4. Basic performance

The inside bits and pieces are just a computer. The chipset, installed memory and the processor are usually standard items. The choice of parts will determine the overall speed. The parts should exceed the capabilities and specifications of the system it is replacing. Be careful when replacing the old system with a fanless system as heating issues can occur. If the old system was fanless, choosing a fanless replacement is the best choice.

5. Multiple I/O ports

An industrial panel PC will include legacy ports such as serial ports and parallel ports. Digital I/O ports are also common. Also make sure the networking requirements are met, this is typically a Fast Ethernet port, but could also include Wifi. USB ports are also typical and very necessary for installing newer parts.

6. Modern extras

Newer industrial panel PCs will also offer some more modern features that can improve ease of installation and setup. Built-in wireless networking can replace a wired network and offers speeds comparable to most wired installations. Optical drives are sometimes included, but accessibility depends on the installation.

IEI Technology Corp. makes a whole bunch of super-tough industrial panel PCs. Check out more about industrial panel PCs at the IEI Technology Corp. blog. http://ieitechnology.ublog2.com/industrial-panel-pc/
